You Can't Have Me, I'm Not Done Yet, I'm Too Strong!

Physical

Mental illnesses are primarily disorders that affect thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, but they can also have physical manifestations. The mind and body are interconnected, and mental health can influence physical health and vice versa. Exercise is key in helping the body and mind to interconnect. Here are some physical aspects associated with mental illness:

1. Neurochemical Imbalances

Many mental illnesses are associated with imbalances in neurotransmitters, which are chemicals that transmit signals between nerve cells. For example, imbalances in serotonin, dopamine, or norepinephrine are often linked to mood disorders like depression and anxiety.

2. Changes in Brain Structure and Function

Some mental illnesses are associated with structural and functional changes in the brain. Conditions such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may be linked to alterations in brain regions and neural pathways.

3. Sleep Disturbances

Mental health conditions can affect sleep patterns. Conditions like depression and anxiety may lead to insomnia or disrupted sleep, while other disorders like bipolar disorder may be associated with changes in sleep-wake cycles.

4. Physical Symptoms

Certain mental health conditions can manifest physical symptoms. For example, individuals with anxiety disorders may experience muscle tension, headaches, and gastrointestinal issues. Chronic stress and anxiety can contribute to various physical health problems. I suffer from headaches daily. The magnitude of the headaches differ from time to time and day to day. Taking over-the-counter medication and using a cold compress is the route I take in helping me to cope.

5. Impact on Immune System

Prolonged stress and certain mental health conditions may weaken the immune system, making individuals more susceptible to illnesses and infections.

6. Weight Changes

Conditions such as depression may lead to changes in appetite and weight. Some individuals may experience weight loss due to a decreased interest in eating, while others may turn to emotional eating and gain weight. Often times when I am depressed I turn to eating “comfort foods”. Usually in the form of chocolate and soda. Sugar and anxiety don’t go well together.

7. Cardiovascular Effects

Chronic stress and certain mental health disorders have been linked to cardiovascular issues. Stress can contribute to high blood pressure and an increased risk of heart disease.

It’s important to note that the relationship between mental and physical health is complex, and each individual’s experience is unique. Additionally, physical symptoms may vary widely among different mental health conditions. Seeking professional help is crucial for accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Mental health professionals, such as psychiatrists, psychologists, and therapists, can provide comprehensive assessments and develop treatment plans that address both mental and physical aspects of well-being.

A holistic approach that combines physical activity with other lifestyle factors and appropriate mental health support is often the most effective in promoting overall well-being. Exercise is one of those things that when you are feeling depressed or anxious it is the last thing you want to think about. But doing something simple such as going for a walk can help to clear your head and get some needed oxygen to your body. Some of the benefits of exercise include the following; Regulation of hormones and endorphins, enhanced self-esteem and body image, improved sleep patterns, enhancement of cognitive function, reduction of stress hormones, and release of neurotransmitters.

I use an elliptical machine six days a week. I like the elliptical because of its smooth motion and total body movement. It is very low impact and it gets my heart rate up. I find that when I am feeling tense or have too much going on in my head it is a great way to find a release and get rid of that negative energy.
