You Can't Have Me, I'm Not Done Yet, I'm Too Strong!

Part 4: The Double-Edged Sword of Therapy

Overall, my experience with therapy has been a double-edged sword. There have been times when I’ve felt like it was a waste of time, especially when there were personality clashes or when I arrogantly thought I knew more than my therapist. But those moments of resistance or misalignment were also learning experiences. It was during those times that I realized the importance of being open to the process and the dangers of shutting myself off from help.

Therapy has taught me that sometimes we need a neutral party to talk to – someone who isn’t involved in our personal lives and can offer a fresh perspective. Talking to a loved one can feel burdensome or like you’re troubling them, but a therapist offers a safe space to get things off your chest without judgment. Though there have been bumps along the way, therapy has ultimately been a lifeline, giving me the tools I need to cope with life and push forward. Despite the frustrations, it has been instrumental in changing the trajectory of my life, teaching me to ask for help, and ultimately finding peace.

If you are struggling with mental health, if you are experiencing undo stress, if you just feel the need to talk, I would recommend seeking help from a therapist. As mentioned, it can be a daunting task to find the right fit, but it can pay off and offer you hope and direction. It can bring about the desire to make changes in your life and better your overall mental health.
